Blake Murray and Ellen Wiitala of the Superiorland Ski club turned in top team performances at the Central Division Wausau Sprint classic race on December 18. The race was held at the Greenwood Hills Country Club on man-made snow, but the course was in excellent shape for racing under sunny skies in Wausau.
Murray completed the 1 km time trail in 2:31.76, good for 12th place in the J1 boys division (16-17 year olds) while Wiitala posted a 3:02.77 for 8th place in the J1 girls. Both racers were eliminated in exciting quarterfinal heats against top division competitors from Minnesota and Wisconsin. Andrew Twohey and Eric Wagner also competed in the time trial finishing 22nd and 23rd with times of 2:38.92 and 2:41.99, respectively, and just missed advancing to the head to head heats.
Superiorland skiers resume junior national qualifier racing at Harbor Springs/Walloon Valley on January 14-15 and the Mayors Challenge in Minneapolis on January 21-22.
