2022 Michigan High School Cross Country Ski Championships, Ishpeming, Michigan
Superiorland Ski Club hosted the 2022 High School Championship Race with the Ishpeming Ski Club February 11 and 12 on familiar and new courses.
Almost 100 skiers from eight teams – Copper Country Ski Club (Hancock), Vasa Ski Club (Traverse City), Superiorland Ski Club (Marquette County), Ishpeming Ski Club (Ishpeming), Lake Michigan-Petoskey Ski Club (Petoskey), Crystal Community Ski Club (Crystal), Peninsula Nordic, and Grand Rapids Nordic Ski Team (Grand Rapids) – competed in the High School races. An additional 20 skiers participated in the middle school races.
Friday’s 5K skate race at Al Quaal Recreation Area was held in very blustery and snowy conditions. Saturday morning’s 5K classic pursuit races held at the UP Nordic Ski Complex were postponed an hour because of cold temperatures. The awards ceremony followed the afternoon sprint races.
The Superiorland Ski Club and Ishpeming Ski Club team parents did a great job volunteering at the meet. The trails at the UP Nordic Ski Complex were expertly groomed by the Ishpeming Ski Club.
West End Bike and Trail was the lead sponsor, and additional support came from Closner Construction, Cleveland-Cliffs, Blackrocks Brewery, Holli Lumber and Incredible Bank.
